During\na speech to the House of Delegates during the 2018 AMA Interim Meeting, AMA\nPresident Barbara L. McAneny, MD, discussed challenges facing the industry and\nstressed the importance of improving electronic health record (HER) usability. \u201cMuch\nof the EHR technology is dysfunctional,\u201d she said. \u201cIt grew out of the billing\nsoftware, so it doesn\u2019t give us the decision support or the information we need.\nThe vendors of these systems like to paint doctors as Luddites who don\u2019t like\ntechnology. They need to understand that we\u202flove\u202ftechnology; we just want\ntechnology that\u202fworks.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\norder to achieve this not-unreasonable goal, the AMA emphasized to Orlando\nattendees the importance of improving the patient-doctor relationship through\ninnovations in medicine that are evidence-based, validated, and can be enacted\nwithout much difficulty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speakers\nat this year\u2019s conference included Health and Human Services Secretary Alex\nAzar II, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma,\nand Don Rucker, MD, the National Coordinator for Health IT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Information\non new mobile health application guidelines regarding privacy, security,\nusability, and content was released by Xcertia, a nonprofit group founded by\nthe AMA and other industry heavyweights. The AMA\/Xcertia partnership is an\nattempt to develop standard industry guidelines that rely on insight from both\npatients and physicians \u2013 a collaborative new approach to technological\ninnovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally,\na joint presentation on effective communication and data flow between\nphysicians and lifestyle-change programs sponsored by the YMCA was delivered by\nKate Kirley, MD, a family physician and the AMA\u2019s director of chronic disease\nprevention, and Mamta Gakhar, director of health care integration at YMCA of\nthe USA. Their talk addressed one of four key questions developed by the AMA with\nthe input of physicians in order to guide partnerships, policies, and digital\nhealth products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
