To understand the impact this will have on the medical system,\nthree health care revenue cycle experts from health systems across the United\nStates weighed in with their predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan\nDowney, manager of pricing charge description master at Seattle\u2019s Virginia\nMason Medical Center, is hopeful that such laws will encourage conversation\nthat leads to refinement in the coming years. \u201cFinancial health is as important\nfor a patient as physical health,\u201d she says. \u201cCurrently, the tools for the\npatient to use to assist in decision making do not exist on a broad spectrum.\nIndividual facilities can provide information, but only for the services they\nprovide. It is up to the patient to track down all of the different information\nand they do not have a complete understanding of the system. While I do not\nbelieve publishing the chargemaster is helpful, it at least gets things\nstarted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meagen\nWindler, director of revenue cycle at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis,\nanticipates that this is just the beginning. \u201cMore stringent guidelines will be\nplaced on organizations to empower customers to make more informed decisions\nabout where they want to receive their care,\u201d she believes.&nbsp;\u201cThis will\nalso force organizations to be more methodical in their pricing to ensure they\nare in line with the market and reevaluate actual costs for the services\nprovided in hopes of stabilizing pricing across various regions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackie\nWoolnough, director of revenue integrity and professional coding at Cleveland\u2019s\nMetroHealth System, has two thoughts regarding price transparency. \u201cFirst, I\nhope that pricing transparency will eventually empower consumers to better understand\nhow hospital billing and health insurance work. This way, they can make more\ninformed decisions when choosing coverage options for them,\u201d she explains.&nbsp;\u201cSecond,\nI feel that this will lead to a normalization of prices in regional markets.\nHospitals will be forced to take a look at what they charge and what their\nprice position in the market is. Hospitals that want to retain patients and\navoid scrutiny will be forced to adjust their prices to the market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nwill be interesting to see the long-term results of price transparency in\nhealth care over the coming years.
