Thanks\nto new and improved technology, telehealth is growing in popularity these days.\nIt isn\u2019t just making inroads in private and public sectors; increasingly,\nmilitary personnel are able to take advantage of its benefits, as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Benefits of\nTelehealth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Veterans\ngenerally have access to excellent health care benefits, but that won\u2019t do them\nmuch good if they live far away from VA facilities. To combat this \u2013 pun\nsort-of intended \u2013 the Veteran\u2019s Administration has established VA Video\nConnect, a telemedicine application that enables patients to be examined by VA\nproviders from the comfort of home. The system works by using encryption to\nconnect veterans with health care providers, ensuring a secure and private\nsession. It provides convenient health care options for patients, eliminating\nthe need to travel great distances \u2013 especially helpful to those veterans who\nlive in rural areas with little or no access to VA facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Federal\nagencies that provide health care have relied on telemedicine for some time\nnow. But with technology becoming more integrated and mobile, and more widely\naccepted by both providers and patients, it\u2019s really beginning to take off now.\nJennifer Covich Bordenick, CEO of the eHealth Initiative \u2013 a nonprofit\norganization pushing for technology-driven improvements in health care \u2013\npredicts virtual visits will outnumber in-person visits within the next ten\nyears. \u201cIt\u2019s just exploding,\u201d she reasons. \u201cPatients love the convenience of\nit, and it allows health care organizations to increase access, reduce their\nno-show rates and avoid a lot of inefficiencies and costs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nVA is at the forefront when it comes to utilizing video to improve care for the\nnine million veterans enrolled in its health care programs. Its telehealth\nsystem connects providers and patients at more than 170 medical centers and\nhospitals, 300 community-based veterans centers, and 1,069 outpatient clinics,\nhelping those in underserved areas gain access to a variety of specialty\nservices including mental health care, substance abuse counseling, dermatology\nissues and post-surgical and post-hospitalization follow-up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other\nagencies are taking note. Last year, the Army launched its own Virtual Medical\nCenter in Texas in order to better enable and synchronize video-based care and\nto aid operational readiness. By providing medics in combat zones with\ntelehealth kids complete with high-definition cameras, digital stethoscopes and\nremote monitoring equipment, field personnel are better prepared to evaluate\nthe condition of wounded soldiers and provide life-saving care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Military\ntelehealth isn\u2019t without its challenges. Licensing and privileging, workflow\nissues, and overall awareness are all potential stumbling blocks. But these\nshould all work themselves out over time, and the day is sure to come where it\nis widely accepted and used by a significant portion of the population. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
