With\nsocial media use rampant and showing no signs of slowing down in terms of\npopularity, it was only a matter of time before health care marketers turned to\nthese online platforms to help with branding and messaging. But this alliance\nis still in its infancy, and there is much untapped potential. Health care\nprofessionals looking to harness the power of social media must follow a plan\nin order to be successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\norder to become an effective communicator in the digital age, health care\nmarketers should pay attention to the following tips in order to ensure they\nare taking advantage of everything these online platforms have to offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Develop\n a social media strategy<\/strong>. This is a multi-step process that\n involves setting goals that address your organizational challenges;\n researching your audience to learn which platforms will be most effective;\n analyzing the competition\u2019s social media efforts; and deciding which\n metrics to focus on. Create shareable content.<\/li>
  2. Create\n engaging content<\/strong>. Once you\u2019ve figured out where and to\n whom you are posting, develop content that will showcase your brand\n identity and promote engagement with your audience. Develop an authentic\n voice and personality for your organization to help build rapport and\n trust. Come up with a range of content that includes photos, videos, and\n stories – all of which are very popular and will help extend your reach. <\/li>
  3. Build\n relationships with your patients<\/strong>. You\u2019ll achieve this by engaging with\n your audience, answering questions and responding to comments in a timely\n manner – including negative ones (though you should take heated\n conversations offline). Consider sharing follower\u2019s posts that are\n relevant to your business – perhaps somebody has tagged you or checked\n into your practice. <\/li>
  4. Maintain\n HIPAA privacy guidelines<\/strong>. Social media is, by its very nature, a\n more casual experience – but that doesn\u2019t give you leeway to let HIPAA\n regulations slip through the cracks. Continue to ensure private\n information is protected, and never share personal details about your\n patients or their health histories. <\/li>
  5. Grow\n your following through hard work<\/strong>. Social media takes time and effort;\n with a hundred other duties demanding your attention on a daily basis, it\n may be tempting to \u201cbuy\u201d followers. But what\u2019s the point? You\u2019re investing\n in social media to build a brand and win new patients, so\n computer-generated likes and shares add little to your bottom line and\n will cost you credibility should your real followers get wind of this\n shortcut.<\/li>
  6. Emphasize\n the \u201csocial\u201d aspects of the medium.<\/strong> There\u2019s a time and place for\n a hard sales pitch, and Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are not it. The\n point of social media is right there in its name – it\u2019s a place to get to\n know your patients on a more casual basis and keep them informed.  <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
