There\nare currently more than 70 million baby boomers, people born between 1946 and\n1964, with about 10,000 turning 65 every year. The number of Americans who are\nof retirement age continues to grow: by 2030, about one in five individuals in\nthe U.S. will meet this definition. By 2050, the number of people aged 65 and\nover should reach 83.7 million, nearly double the figure from 2012 (43.1\nmillion). All of these statistics illustrate the impact baby boomers are having\non the health care industry \u2013 not just because of their overall numbers, but\nalso due to an inevitable decline in health that will eventually occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mounting Health Concerns for Seniors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ascentblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/older-couple-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1733\" width=\"569\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ascentblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/older-couple-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ascentblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/older-couple-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ascentblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/older-couple-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2030, the American Hospital Association (AHA)\nestimates that about 25 percent of baby boomers \u2013 some 14 million \u2013 will have\ndiabetes, and a third (21 million) will be obese. Half will suffer from\narthritis, and 60 percent will be in need of treatment for multiple chronic\nmedical conditions. These numbers translate to an increase in demand for\ncaregivers; in fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks health and personal\ncare aides as one of the fastest-growing occupations in the U.S., with a\nprojection of 1.2 million new jobs available between now and 2026. Registered\nnurses will also be in high demand, with projected job growth of 1.5 million\nfor the same period.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2030 is a watershed year because the U.S. Census\nBureau projects that older people will outnumber children for the first time in\nhistory. More seniors mean a stronger demand for physicians, especially those\nwho specialize in areas such as orthopedics, cardiology, ophthalmology and urology.\nThe Association of American Medical Colleges projects a shortage of primary\ncare physicians and specialists as hospital admissions are expected to double\nby that year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baby boomers are increasingly tech-savvy and are in\nfavor of digital health care. They view smartphones and computers as important\ntools to help them manage their own care, whether that means reminding them of\nupcoming appointments, scheduling after-hours visits and follow-ups and\nproviding educational opportunities such as online classes. With the jump in\nnumbers expected to put a strain on an already overburdened U.S. health care\nsystem, this embrace of technology should help pave the way for telehealth and\nremote care \u2013 keys to providing appropriate care to aging patients while limiting\ncosts and utilizing fewer resources. Advantages to this technology include\npersonalized care, comfort, service and convenience \u2013 factors that baby boomers\nappreciate.
