Potlucks are a rite of passage in every office. They offer a chance for employees to bond with one another over a communal meal, and provide aspiring chefs with a platform for showcasing their culinary goods. But there are certain rules of etiquette you should keep in mind when attending your next potluck. In keeping with the spirit of the potluck – lighthearted and fun – we’ll discuss them in poem form.

An email’s been sent and you’re over the moon:

A potluck’s been scheduled next Friday at noon.

Of course you’re excited and can’t wait to munch

Nothing tastes better than a buffet for lunch!

Before digging in, this advice you should heed

Learn potluck etiquette to get up to speed.

Rule number one: if feasting’s your wish

Make sure you arrive with your very own dish.

It needn’t be fancy, but use common sense

A salad is fine, but avoid condiments.

Dessert’s a crowd pleaser, an entrée is swell

Even a beverage would go over well.

Just don’t plan to show up empty handed

Or a “freeloader” you will be branded.

If you don’t know how to sauté, bake or roast

And your cooking is limited to slightly burned toast

Nobody’s expecting the next Bobby Flay

A trip to the grocery store is okay.

Once you’ve shown up with a food contribution

Follow these tips to prevent more confusion:

Take your place in a neat and orderly line

Instead of dashing up front yelling “mine!”

Refrain from piling up food on your plate

That extra helping of chili must wait

This isn’t the time to be greedy; please share

So the last guy in line will still find food there.

If the casserole you tried tasted pretty subpar

Complaining about it will not get you far.

Be gracious and kind so nobody’s feelings are hurt

And after you’ve finished your last bite of dessert,

Help with the clean-up! Don’t leave it to others

These folks are your colleagues; don’t treat them like mothers!

Do not leave the kitchen or break room a mess.

These few simple rules will ensure you success!
